![]() ![]() In the realms of memory, the fact that it is vivid doesn't guarantee that it really happened.Įven highly emotional memories are susceptible to distortion. Two weeks after they were shown the pictures, about half of the participants "remembered" the childhood balloon ride, producing some strikingly vivid descriptions, and many showed surprise when they heard that the event had never occurred. ![]() She then doctored some of the images to show the participant's childhood face in one of these never-experienced contexts, such as the basket of a hot-air balloon in flight. She colluded with the parents of her student participants to get photos from the undergraduates' childhoods, and to ascertain whether certain events, such as a ride in a hot-air balloon, had ever happened. These recollections can often be very vivid, as in the case of a study by Kim Wade at the University of Warwick. If the experimental conditions are set up correctly, it turns out to be rather simple to give people memories for events that never actually happened. Psychologists have conducted studies on eyewitness testimony, for example, showing how easy it is to change someone's memories by asking misleading questions. We know this from many different sources of evidence. That makes them curiously susceptible to distortion, and often not nearly as reliable as we would like. Autobiographical memories are stitched together as and when they are needed from information stored in many different neural systems. They are mental reconstructions, nifty multimedia collages of how things were, that are shaped by how things are now. Sci-fi and fantasy fictions might try to persuade us otherwise, but memories are not discrete entities that can be taken out of one person's head, Dumbledore-style, and distilled for someone else's viewing. Memories are not filed away in the brain like so many video cassettes, to be slotted in and played when it's time to recall the past. When you ask people about their memories, they often talk as though they were material possessions, enduring representations of the past to be carefully guarded and deeply cherished. It is distinguished from semantic memory, which is memory for facts, and other kinds of implicit long-term memory, such as your memory for complex actions such as riding a bike or playing a saxophone. The sort of memory I have described is known as "autobiographical memory", because it is about the narrative we make from the happenings of our own lives. This is quite a trick, psychologically speaking, and it has made cognitive scientists determined to find out how it is done. I become a time traveller who can return to the present as soon as the demands of "now" intervene. I am back there, amid the sights and sounds and seaside smells. ![]() I am somehow able to reconstruct the moment in some of its sensory detail, and relive it, as it were, from the inside. When I cast back to an event from my past – let's say the first time I ever swam backstroke unaided in the sea – I don't just conjure up dates and times and places (what psychologists call "semantic memory"). It's no surprise, then, that there is fascination with this quintessentially human ability. "Our memory is our coherence," wrote the surrealist Spanish-born film-maker, Luis Buñuel, "our reason, our feeling, even our action." Lose your memory and you lose a basic connection with who you are. And, for better or worse, your remembered life story is a pretty good guide to what you will do tomorrow. To know who you are as a person, you need to have some idea of who you have been.

Since the release of the Xbox One I have had a couple of headsets but they were all from Turtle Beach and to be honest I cheeped out and originally bought the 800x's. Any consumer videos were of one product or the other, never both. In my search for a high end headset I looked high and low on the internet but I couldn't find any consumer comparisons of the two flagship headsets, the Astro A50's and the Turtle Beach 800x Elites, I could only find sponsored videos on YouTube. I just wish I’d tried the Astro brand sooner. You’re left in no doubt whether it’s charging or not and can see if you have Dolby enabled. After 3 hours of play only one bar of the 4 bar battery indicator flashes when I place the headset back on the dock so it seems the 15 hour battery life claim is about right.I’ve had wireless gaming headsets for 10 years and these are far and away the best built and have at least as good sound as any I have had before. I also like the amount of info the basestation gives you from its indicator lights. Look at this if your surround sound doesn’t seem right when first using. They are also light and comfortable, with sensibly places controls which aren’t fiddly to use or hard to remember (compared to 800x). NOTE: out of the box the ‘Astro’ surround sound and ‘Studio’ stereo sound presets were opposite to what the instructions stated. You can also modify this with the software (downloaded separately) which is also very easy to use. Crisp and bassy all at once with a higher volume limit than I’m used to (or actually use). Glad I didn’t.These are very simple to set up and the sound is excellent. Namely the audio drop outs and distortion issues mentioned elsewhere which I spent about a total of 4 - 6 hours trying to rectify with everything I could think of / find on forums / tech dept told me to try. After spending such a large amount on that wireless headset and encountering those problems I was thinking of just reverting back to my TB Stealth’s. I bought these after having constant issues from new with the Turtle Beach Elite 800x which I sent back. The other sediments eroded away, while the more resistant oolite weathered into hummocks, small arches and other natural "sculptures". When the lake drained (2 to 4 million years ago), the oolite was left behind, along with siltstone, volcanic tuffs and alluvium from adjacent mountain slopes. ![]() Wave action in the lake washed sediments back and forth in the shallows on the southwestern shore, forming ooids and depositing them on steeper benches near the shore in 2- to 40-foot thicknesses. 10 million years ago, the Plain formed the bed of Lake Idaho. One of the world's largest freshwater lakebed oolites is the Shoofly Oolite, a section of the Glenns Ferry Formation on southwestern Idaho's Snake River Plain. The material consolidated and eroded during later exposure above the ocean surface. This limestone was formed by deposition when shallow seas covered the area between periods of glaciation. The Atlantic Coastal Ridge of southeastern Florida, the islands of the Lower Florida Keys, and much of the Everglades, are underlain by Miami Oolite. Carboniferous Hunts Bay Oolite lies under much of south Wales. A particular type, Bath Stone, gives the buildings of the World Heritage City of Bath their distinctive appearance. Some exemplar oolitic limestone was formed in England during the Jurassic period, and forms the Cotswold Hills, the Isle of Portland with its famous Portland Stone, and part of the North York Moors. Because of its extremely small grain size, oolitic sand has a lot of surface area, which promotes high bacterial growth. This unusually smooth sand promotes the growth of bacteria, which are important biofilters in home aquaria. Also known as "oolitic" sand, the sugar-sized round grains of this sand pass easily through the gills of gobies and other sand-sifting organisms. Oolites are often used in the home aquarium industry because their small grain size (0.2 to 1.22 mm) is ideal for shallow static beds and bottom covering of up to 1" in depth. The size of the oolites reflect the time that they were exposed to the water before they were covered with later sediment. The oolites are commonly found in large current bedding structures that resemble sand dunes. ![]() Strong intertidal currents wash the 'seeds' around on the seabed, where they accumulate layers of chemically precipitated calcite from the supersaturated water. The mechanism of formation starts with a small fragment of sediment acting as a 'seed', such as a piece of a shell. They are usually formed in warm, supersaturated, shallow, highly agitated marine water intertidal environments, though some are formed in inland lakes. Oolitic hematite occurs at Red Mountain near Birmingham, Alabama, along with oolitic limestone. Dolomitic and chert ooids are most likely the result of the replacement of the original texture in limestone. Ooids are most commonly composed of calcium carbonate ( calcite or aragonite), but can be composed of phosphate, clays, chert, dolomite or iron minerals, including hematite. The term oolith can refer to oolite or individual ooids. Strictly, oolites consist of ooids of diameter 0.25–2 millimetres rocks composed of ooids larger than 2 mm are called pisolites.
